The Whistle of the Amorous Airs

If the “sonorous rivers” are theologically the voice of God, the next onomatopoeia, “the whistle of the amorous airs,” signifies the communication of God’s intelligence to the soul’s ears. John illustrates the auditory perception of God’s knowledge by resorting to the biological process through which hearing takes place, involving sound and touch:

It is called “whistle” because just as the whisper of the air enters keenly in the vessel of the ear [the eardrum], thus this very subtle and delicate intelligence enters with admirable savor and delight in the intimate substance of the soul. . . . Just as the touch of the air is savored with the sense of tact and the whisper of the same air [is savored] with the ear, thus the touch of the virtues of the Lover is felt and relished with the tact of the soul, which is its substance, and the intelligence of such virtues of God is felt in the ear of the soul, which is the understanding.92
